Sports therapy is an aspect of healthcare that involves the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of a patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness.
The Society of Sports Therapists state that sports therapy utilises the principles of sport and exercise science incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and where applicable, work.
Sports therapists are allied health professionals with expertise in musculoskeletal disorders. They treat pain and injuries through hands-on treatment and rehabilitation. They undergo an intensive three-year degree which focusses primarily on the musculoskeletal system and on restoring, maintaining and maximising movement to relieve pain and increase the quality of life.
Graduate Sports Therapists, who are Members of the Society, have skills which are based around these five components; Prevention, Recognition and evaluation Management: treatment and referral, Rehabilitation, Education and professional practice issues.
There is a lot of overlap and an abundant of the basic training is the same for Sports Therapy and Physiotherapy, but much will depend on the practitioners training and experience. In terms of undergraduate training, physiotherapy is more about getting someone out of a hospital bed and back to work. Sports Therapy is focused on getting someone who is relatively able but can’t enjoy or get back to their favourite sport, exercise, work or normal daily activities, because of pain or dysfunction.

We will then discuss in detail your injury/concern, followed by a full assessment. You may wish to wear comfy, loose clothing to your appointment as you will be required to move around. We may need to assess other areas of the body as well to identify the issue, eg; if you have pain in your hip, we may need to also look at your back or knees to.
We will then decide on the appropriate treatment, explain our plan of management, and describe what we are doing throughout. This will be followed by advice on suitable aftercare, such as exercise, and stretches. (We will more than likely give you some homework to do 📚)
Yes, we treat those under 18 at The Recovery Room. However, if under 16 they will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian or have consent from guardian/parent to attend alone and consent to treatment.
